On February 24th 2011, the Byron Community Centre is hosting the first Byron Shire Volunteer Expo. The doors will open at 11am and the expo will showcase organisations in the shire that rely on volunteers as part of their work force. Volunteer contributions keep the community vibrant and alive.
Byron Bay at the heart of the shire is filled with many different people who volunteer to make our community a wonderful place to work and play.
The Byron Shire has an amazing diversity of organisations that need volunteers - from art projects to theatre, landcare, music performances and community events. The Expo will showcase these organisations and also provides an opportunity to recruit more volunteers. Volunteering offers various ways in which to gain experience, skills, and to meet lots of people in different jobs.
School leavers and year ten students are particularly encouraged to come and explore the many different organisations that could be great places to do their work experience.
‘So you want to volunteer’ ... “In the past year I have seen the Dalai Lama’s film, talks by an Australian Buddhist nun, attended the Voyeur Fashion show, and listened to some fantastic Spanish music as well as Fusion and Indian music bands. I have done all these things because I volunteer at the Byron Bay Community Centre and I love it.“ Jeanette from Ocean Shores.
The Community Centre will be alive with laughter and joy as we celebrate the wonderful work that volunteers do for the community. Everyone is invited to come in and wander through the stalls, you never know, you just might find something that captures your interest and become a volunteer! The expo will also incorporate the launch of the new No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) operating from the Byron Community Centre.
Doors open to the public at 11am, come on in and meet your neighbours
